The Difference Between Hemp CBD & Cannabis CBD

Soon after the legalization of CBD and Hemp production, the popularity of CBD products is increasing rapidly. More and more people are taking an interest in different CBD products, including oil, capsules, edibles, and even cosmetics and body products.

The uses of CBD and Hemp products are increasing significantly because their benefits encourage people to take an interest in these products and consume them in different ways. Nonetheless, a factor regarding CBD that often confuses people is whether the CBD used in products comes from Cannabis or Hemp?

So, it is essential to know that CBD is derived from different varieties of cannabis Sativa plants. Both Hemp CBD and Cannabis CBD have many differences regarding their effects, THC amount, and legalisation.

What are Hemp and CBD?

In order to make clear the difference between Hemp and Cannabis CBD, it is important to have a better understanding of the word “Hemp” and “CBD” first, because many consumers are not aware of the actual relation between CBD and Hemp.

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a compound in the cannabis Sativa plant having numerous benefits and non-psychoactive properties, which are the reasons for its growing popularity. Hemp also is a variety of this cannabis plant that contains a higher amount of CBD and a trivial amount of THC, which makes it non-psychoactive. Basically, CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, which is also known as hemp extract.

Hemp CBD vs Cannabis CBD

Hemp and Cannabis are two different terms for the cannabis Sativa plant species, though similar in appearance but have different effects and benefits.

The confusions about Hemp and Cannabis CBD relates to the classification, name, and strains of the plant. If described in simple words, they are different strains of the same plant varying in THC amount.

The hemp plant is rich in CBD, while the Cannabis plant has a higher level of THC (a psychoactive cannabinoid responsible for the “High” and intoxication typically associated with Cannabis). The amount of THC makes Hemp and Cannabis different from each other and determines their advantages and disadvantages.

Hemp classifies as a cannabis plant that contains 0.3% or less THC, which is not enough to produce intoxicating effects that Cannabis has because of the higher THC amount it contains.

Cannabis-derived CBD has a wide range of benefits and a stronger terpene profile than Hemp. It has excellent therapeutic potential to relieve pain but can get you ‘high’. However, Hemp also has some terpenes and cannabinoids, but it provides uplifting effects without altering your senses. Therefore, it is used to create a variety of products, liquids, and edibles.

Legal Status

Another significant difference between hemp CBD and cannabis CBD is their legal status. According to the Misuse of Drug Act 1971, Cannabis is illegal and classified as a Class B controlled drug, but pure CBD is excluded from this act. However, several laws and regulations are to be followed, and the CBD products can only contain 1 mg of THC or less, which is basically zero density by weight.

As far as Hemp is concerned, although it contains a little amount of THC, it is considered “Cannabis” due to the cannabis Sativa plant species of Hemp.

On the other hand, medical Cannabis is legal in the United Kingdom. In 2018, only expert doctors were allowed by the British Government “to legally issue prescriptions for cannabis-based medicines when they agree that their patients could benefit from this treatment”.

Ways to use Hemp and Cannabis

Depending on their effects and consumer’s intent, Hemp and Cannabis also differ in how they are used. Since the use of Cannabis is illegal except for medical purposes, it is mainly cultivated for medical and recreational use just because of its psychoactive qualities and higher THC content. Regardless of legalisation. Hemp has various uses in multiple products, fabric, cosmetics, paper, foods, building materials, oils, and is also smoked in cigarettes.

People suffering from chronic pain, inflammation, nausea, psychosis or mental disorders, depression, or other medical issues, can use CBD to maintain their health. The most common Medical CBD products are edibles, oils, tinctures, capsules, pills, CBD infused oils, and vaporized liquids.
